I’m Matt, and welcome to Steady Beats. If you like to walk for a better life, and also like Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life,” you just might like this newsletter.
Thank you Matt for the feature. I'm hubled and honored that it connected. As someone who used to believe working out was my job, it's been a change of mindset, but what you said is so true. Fitness matters because it allows us to enjoy these moments for as long as we're given on earth.
Also, I loved your rant on sports writing. It reminds me that there was once a love for games more than a love for breaking news and being first. Or maybe I'm being naive. Either way, I'm with you on not enjoying the Never Ending Now of sports writing.
Matt, I have pretty much given up on newspaper sports coverage. The local papers and national media simply don't go deep enough, settling for minimal coverage, or focusing on peripheral storylines (point spreads and fantasy statistics). There are plenty of great newsletters, websites and podcasts that focus on a particular team or an aspect of the game that Big Media doesn't have space for. The gutting of newsrooms has a silver lining - there are quite a few very good sportswriters that have gone independent on Substack.

Such a great piece, Latham. Loved it!
And I like bread.
Good call out on Latham's piece, it was really good.
Have we talked about Hunter S. Thompson’s sports writing before?
We have not, and we should!

I really need to dig in here and find the great sportswriters. I also enjoy a lot of the work on The Athletic.
